Depp Movie Causes Upset on Caribbean Island
The makers of the Pirates Of The Caribbean sequel have sparked outrage on the island of Bataka, Dominica - by roasting Johnny Depp alive on a spit in a cannibal scene. Outraged residents of the tranquil island have accused studio bosses of insinuating their forebears practiced such inhumane rituals. And Charles Williams, the chief of the 3,500 remaining natives, has added his voice of dissent - and has blasted the locals who have signed up as extras in the movie for $95 a day. However, film bosses are attempting to downplay the uproar by insisting the scene is light-hearted and in no way reflects the history of Bataka.

Carib Tribe Leader Tries To Halt 'Pirates' Shooting
Some members of the Carib tribe on the island of Dominica, including the chief, are calling on fellow members to boycott the production of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean sequel because of a scene in which Johnny Depp's character is captured and tied to a skewer with fruits and vegetables "like a shish kebob," the Los Angeles Times reported today (Monday). Chief Charles Williams maintains that the film perpetuates the myth that the Caribs were cannibals. "Today, that myth, that stigma is still alive," Williams told the Los Angeles Times. "Today, Disney wants to popularize that stigma one more time, this time through film, and film is a powerful tool of propaganda." Disney has hired about 400 locals to work on the sequel, but Williams told the Times: "For me, a good name is better than riches. ... Shame on us that for a few dollars we are betraying our flesh and blood."

'Pirates' sequels capture Skarsgard, Harris
Stellan Skarsgard and Naomie Harris are boarding Walt Disney Pictures' back-to-back sequels to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. The sequels reunite the main players in the 2003 blockbuster: Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley star, Gore Verbinski directs, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio write and Jerry Bruckheimer produces. In the new films, Skarsgard will play Bloom's long-lost father, and Harris will play a gypsy queen. Disney's Brigham Taylor is overseeing. Pirates 2 is scheduled for a summer 2006 release. Shooting is to start in early March in Los Angeles and the Caribbean. Pirates 2 reunites Skarsgard with Bruckheimer; the actor appeared in last year's King Arthur, which Bruckheimer produced. ICM-repped Skarsgard's recent credits include Exorcist: The Beginning and Dogville. Harris might be best known stateside for starring in the horror film 28 Days Later. She also appeared in After the Sunset as well as British television's adaptation of Zadie Smith's novel White Teeth. Harris is repped by CAA.

Richards To Play Depp's Father
Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp's wish has been granted - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is set to play his father in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Treasures Of The Lost Abyss. Depp has admitted that he based his character Captain Jack Sparrow on the aging rocker when he shot the 2003 hit Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, and now the stars are reportedly set to team up on screen. Earlier this year, Depp was alleged to have expressed an interest in Richards playing his father. The sequel is set to begin filming in February, with director Gore Verbinski taking the helm again.

Keith Richards May Make Movie Debut
Rumors have begun circulating on British websites that Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards will appear in the sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss as Johnny Depp's father. There was no confirmation of the rumors from Disney, the film's producer. In interviews after the original film was released, Depp said that he had modeled his character after Richards. The sequel to due to start production in February.

Depp set for adventure in 'Shantaram'
Gregory David Roberts' Shantaram: A Novel, which is scheduled for publication next week by St. Martin's Press, has attracted the attention of Warner Bros. Pictures, Initial Entertainment Group, Plan B and Johnny Depp's Infinitum Nihil. Together, they have acquired film rights to the novel as a starring vehicle for Depp in a deal said to be worth $1 million-$2 million. Depp would play the novel's narrator, a young Australian man who escapes from a prison Down Under and goes on to build a new life for himself in the slums of India before going to fight with insurgents in their struggle against the Russians in Afghanistan. Warners and IEG are co-financing with Warners taking domestic distribution and Initial handling international rights to the project. Initial's Graham King, Plan B's Brad Grey and Depp will be producers. Depp's current projects include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for Warners and Pirates of the Caribbean 2 for the Walt Disney Co. Depp and Roberts are repped by UTA. Shantaram is also repped by publishing agent Joe Regal and Regal Literary in New York.

Depp Wants Keith Richards to Play His Father
Johnny Depp wants Rolling Stone Keith Richards to play his father in the upcoming sequel to Pirates of the Caribbean, according to a report on Britain's ITV. Depp had previously told interviewers that he modeled his character in the original movie on Richards and the cartoon character Pepe LePew. Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Treasures of the Lost Abyss is currently scheduled for a 2006 release.
